#4 Recreating this is going to cost $152 each. So let's take a look at making this cheaper.
As you may know all of the cams come with their own AC/DC inverters. So what I really need is a DC to AC inverter and use the cords that come with the cams. As I type this I have solved this with stuff I already own. A Targus DC/AC Inverter, $60. That is a lot more than the approximately $26 I would spend on the converter, but right now for testing it worked fine and it cost me nothing. On 15 July 2008 I plugged it altogether.
On 16 July it is running. I am accessing it with the standard application that comes with the cam as well as uploading it to the Internet.
17 July Well things went badly. I don't get enough of a charge from the little solar charger. The battery ran down my Targus just beeped away at me. Then every thing stopped working. I guess I should just pack it all up as a dumb idea. NO WAY. I am not quite ready to give it up but on the other hand I am not willing to shell out beau coup bucks to put solar on my house. Enter Harbor Freight. I was looking at their flyer at my brothers house. On sale was a 45 watt solar system. Plus 15% off coupon my brother had that expired on the 21st (the next day). Oh well I guess I have to go for it. I got the kit home at noon. It's Phoenix, in July. I let it sit in the garage until 7:00PM.
I
unboxed it and put it together. Now we wait for daylight. I have it all
over the back yard right now for testing.
Funny thing about the kit: It comes with 2 light bulbs. It's a solar kit. It needs the sun to work what the heck do I need lights for? It is fairly obvious this kit is to play "mad scientist solar geek". The lights don't have an on/off switch even.
