Put this all together and cross fingers. Oh my god it works. That's all it took. Ugly yes. I should insert a picture here of it all laying on my patio table, but I won't. First thing I noticed was that the converter runs hot. I mean really "hot" probably not a good thing. Second, I have 2 sets of alligator clips hold ing attached to the battery not exactly elegant. Third, the Sunsei is really not designed to be outside all the time neither is the webcam. Fourth, recreating this is going to cost $152 each.
#1 Solving the hot problem is fairly easy: Buy a better converter. That is easy to solve. Powerstream.com has just what I need and is cheaper than the one from Radio Shack. except for shipping charge. If I continue down this path I will get it from them. Their tech support guy was a great help. I don't know what his degree is in, could be anything, but he signs his emails with Ph.D. I think I trust him over some dweeb at Radio Shack.
#2 Cleaning up the alligator clips will be easy: Cut them off and wrap the wires on the battery posts. No I am not going to do that. A $5 battery cable cut in half attached to the battery posts will let me clip things on the wires. I will probably solder them on.
#3 The Sunsei and webcam are really not designed to be outside all the time:
a) Just going to wrap it in Reynolds plastic wrap.
b) Stick the web cam in a Ziplock bag. This is not going to work out sticking the cam in the bag it gets hot too. I will have to build an enclosure. Maybe I will find a cam that I can put outside, of course that is going to cost more. In actuality my outdoor camera is under an eave and won't need it, but as you can see on that page, there is more than one. That were solving problem 4 comes into play.
