Couldn't Sell it so Now it is the Next Bike
27 June: Tried selling a really nice Gary Fisher frame I got for $10. I finally gave up and have decided to put the engine from my first bike on it.
It
will need new tires, a higher handle bar, cabling and a seat to
start with. Since the engine is already broke in I am going
to use a Sick
Bike Parts Shift kit on this one. I am a little
concerned about the "diamond" and whether I can get the motor to fit,
it looks pretty tight.
29 June: Got the shift kit ($179), bigger sprocket
and dual pull brake from Sick Bike Parts, went to the "cheap bike shop"
over on Dunlap and got a nice set of handlerbars ($10),
I started putting it all together. When I got to the part
where I would put in the the parts for the bottom bracket, I found out
I have a cartridge style bottom bracket. I went to Swiss
America to get cups instead. No joy, they could
order me a new cartridge with a custom shaft. Went to Xhale
hoping that they would have the part. Fortunately they did,
for only $5. (I ended up using the cartridge on the Rear Engine Build)
As you can see from the above picture I need rubber,
so I splurged on tires 2 for $30 26 x 2.0 Specialized Pros,
man they are big and maybe too wide, time will tell. I put
the engine mounting kit on and notices that the clutch
acuator arm was a bit long. It is going to conflict with the
top mounting bracket, I think. I took the acutator off of the
ThatsDax engine, which is shorter to solve that issue quickly.
Had some trouble getting the screws out but in the end it
came off. I put the assembled engine in the frame, just to
find out that the carb is going to touch the top of the frame.
My neighbor gave me a shorter intake manifold, which
I think I still will need to cut down some more, time will
tell. As it stands, I have to tilt the carb a little to get
it all to work.
Higher handlebars mean longer cables. Kmart sells
the Bell cable kit for something like $5 and I have one on hand just in
case. Needed to run a new rear shifter cable front and rear
brake cables too. I hate working on the derailler cable,
I always have issues getting the cable to go through the hole
and around the shifter, This one was no different, it just
took time and a bottle of Mike's Hard Lemonade.
July1: Yesterday morning I had it all together, or at least together enough to test fire up everything. The engine has been sitting around since I pulled it off the Skyliner but it fired up just fine. I had some issues with the throttle sticking,. so the carb is tilted a bit to clear the frame. I got back on the bike and gave it another test run. Everything went well, until the rusted chain gave out. I knew that would happen and planned on putting on a new chain. It was time to clean up to get some more electroshock therapy on my throat so I decided to try out PaloVerde Bike's for a chain. It is real close to the therapist's office, so after therapy I headed over there. Can't say that I was impressed, I brought the chain with me so he could see what I had. He was more interested in how many gears I had. I told him, what bike, I think that upset him since it was old, who knows, I paid $20 for a nice KMC chain, same as I have on "Blue Chaos" After buying the chain, I took a look around his shop to see if he had anything I might want. While perusing the store a young girl came in looking for a bike, she must have upset him too cause she was looking for a bike under $300, he sort of lost interest in helping her too. I decide to pass on buying a rear kickstand and Cateye tail light there. I saw the girl as I was leaving and told her to look online for a used bike. Too bad the guy in the store couldn't hear me.
